Gaming PC buying: where performance tradeoffs matter
Gaming hardware decisions are most useful when they begin with a target: the games you play, the resolution and refresh rate of your display, and the kind of settings you care about.
What to evaluate
Display target
A system for a 1080p display has different needs from one meant for high-resolution or high-refresh gameplay. Align the computer with the screen you own or plan to buy.
Balanced budget
Avoid spending so heavily on one component that memory, storage, cooling, or power delivery become a constraint for the whole system.
Upgrade path
Check available expansion slots, power supply headroom, and physical space before treating future upgrades as guaranteed.
Total setup
Include monitor, keyboard, mouse, headset, and network needs in the actual budget. The system is only one part of the experience.
