Portable SSD buying guide: capacity, speed, and what matters most

Portable SSDs are useful for moving projects and maintaining an offline copy of important files. The best choice is usually a balance of capacity and dependable workflow, not the largest speed number on the box.

What to evaluate

Capacity headroom

Plan for your current library plus growth. Backups work best when there is room for versions rather than a drive filled to the edge.

Interface ceiling

A fast drive cannot exceed the speed of your computer, cable, or port. Verify the USB generation or Thunderbolt support across the full chain.

File pattern

Large video projects benefit from sustained transfers; documents and photos may make capacity and portability more valuable than peak speed.

Recovery plan

A portable SSD is not a complete backup strategy on its own. Keep important data in more than one location and test restores periodically.
