Backup power for a desk: UPS basics without the guesswork

An uninterruptible power supply can give you time to save work and shut down safely during a power interruption. It is not meant to keep every device running for hours.

What to evaluate

Load calculation

Add the approximate wattage of the equipment you intend to protect. Leave margin instead of selecting a unit at its maximum rating.

Runtime expectation

Higher capacity generally means more time, but monitors, gaming PCs, and network equipment draw very different amounts of power.

Protected devices

Prioritize the computer, display, router, modem, or storage device that needs a safe shutdown. Keep high-draw accessories off battery outlets when appropriate.

Battery care

UPS batteries age. Plan for periodic testing and replacement according to the manufacturer’s guidance rather than assuming permanent capacity.
