How to choose a dock and desk setup that actually fits

A dock or desk control surface is a compatibility decision, not a port-count contest. The right option depends on the USB-C or Thunderbolt capability of your computer, the displays you intend to run, whether you need it to provide power, and which recurring actions are worth mapping to dedicated controls.

What to evaluate

Host connection

Confirm whether your laptop supports USB-C data only, USB-C with DisplayPort Alt Mode, or Thunderbolt. Similar connectors can carry very different capabilities.

Display path

Match the dock’s video outputs to the resolution and refresh rate you need. Multiple-display support also varies by computer and operating system.

Power delivery

Compare the dock’s supplied wattage with your laptop’s recommended charger. A lower-wattage dock can be fine for light work but may not sustain demanding workloads.

Desk tradeoffs

Favor the ports or dedicated controls you use daily—Ethernet, fast USB-A, card readers, front-access audio, or recurring call and app actions—over a long list you will never touch.
